Almost two weeks has passed since #CassieXHollyInPH, but to be honest, I still can't believe the event happened in the first place. I never thought that it would be possible for this particular dream to come true, but somehow, it did. Thank you so much, National Book Store!
I still remember the day the event was announced. I remember just bursting into tears and sharing my excitement with all my blogger friends (and even my friends who don't really read), and I immediately started thinking of what to say to Cassie, and which backlist book I wanted signed. Those weeks between the announcement and the signing were so emotional - I kept on crying because I was excited, and because of the disbelief that I'm finally getting to meet my favorite author. I didn't know if I wanted to cry or scream in joy, so I just did both. Heh. Lyra in a nutshell. I'm so lucky to have an incredible friend who was with me every step of the way, and through all the emotions - thank you, Lou, for being so kind and supportive. I'm so happy that we both have had the experience of having our favorite authors come for a local signing!
Today, I have Danielle L. Jensen (author of Stolen Songbird aka the book that made me fall in love with the fantasy genre) on the blog and I am dying of excitement. I am so pumped. (So so so so pumped that I'm actually using the word PUMPED.) And add in the fact that I am halfway through Hidden Huntress (which has been nothing short of spectacular so far!!!) and yeah... I'm just so happy to have had the chance to ask Danielle a few questions! (So many exclamation points, Lyra...)

1.) Please describe Hidden Huntress in five words.
Dark, heart breaking, romantic, political, and magical.
2.) What can fans expect from Hidden Huntress? (Please don't say a cliffhanger...)
Hidden Huntress is darker, broodier novel than Stolen Songbird, and the pacing is quite different. I think those readers who were interested in the world outside of Trollus will get a lot of that, and readers who enjoyed the intrigue of Stolen Songbird will really enjoy the chapters from Tristan’s point of view. As far as romance goes, well… I’m going to play coy on that.
I think the ending will satisfy readers while leaving them full of anticipation for the next book. But I’m a bit biased
3.) How have things been different for you since the release and success of Stolen Songbird?
I felt a lot more pressure when I was writing Hidden Huntress, because I really didn’t want to disappoint readers who felt so passionately about Stolen Songbird. I think that when readers really enjoy your first book, their expectations of you increase exponentially, and that was quite intimidating for me.
4.) One of the aspects I liked the most about Stolen Songbird is how Cécile was portrayed - she was strong and capable, but she also had her moments of weakness. She had depth. What else will can we expect from Cécile in Hidden Huntress?
In Stolen Songbird, Cécile had to be strong and capable in the face of things that scared her. In Hidden Huntress, she has to be strong and capable in the face of extreme frustration, and she really struggles with that. It was one thing for her to be brave when the path she wanted to take was clear, but not knowing what to do undercuts her strengths. I went after her weaknesses in this book, and readers will see her emotionally stumble a lot more than they did in the first installment. But she’s still her tenacious self, so don’t despair!
5.) Last, but definitely not the least, here's a fun question: let's say you had the chance to invite over someone you personally don't know for dinner. Who would that person be, and why?
I would invite Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), because he seems both delightful and hilarious. However, I saw a description of what he eats in a day, and it included a lot of cod. I hate cod, so we’d have to find a compromise.
ACOTAR is one of the best YA fantasy books of 2015. Yeah, no, I don't care that it's only May and I rationally shouldn't be make such a bold statement. Please just believe me when I say that it's an amazing book, because it's THAT AWESOME. So... I bet you can just imagine my excitement in being able to say that I have Sarah J. Maas on the blog today. (!!!) Yes guys, I was able to interview SARAH J. MAAS. I'M STILL FREAKING OUT (Thank you to Louisse of Throne of Glass PH for this opportunity!)

2.) Let's say you got shipwrecked in an island, and you get to pick one ACOTAR character to save you. Who will you pick, and why?
Rhysand. One, because he’s yummy, and two, because his power allows him to jump between places. So, he’d literally be able to take me anywhere I wished.
3.) If you were given the chance to collaborate with an author, who would she/he be and why? Also, what series would consider doing a crossover with, if possible (TV series, movies, books, etc.)
My best friend and fellow YA author, Susan Dennard. She and I have already co-written a bunch of stuff, including The Starkillers Cycle, which is a free serialized space opera on tumblr: http://thestarkillerscycle.tumblr.com
As for crossover series…. I’d love to do an Alien franchise crossover. I’m obsessed with those films (my phone case is a meditating xenomorph). Celaena hunting xenomorphs would be the definition of Epic.
4.) If you were to belong is a faerie court, which one would you be in and why?
So hard to answer that question without spoiling future books, since we get to see some of those courts (and the secrets they contain)!
5.) Hi Sarah, Rhys here. Lyra is forcing me to ask... Maybe you could give the readers a hint of what's in store for me in the coming books....?
Many things. Awesome things. Terrible things. But you’re going to start off by calling in that bargain you made. And you’re going to have to fight to keep all your secrets hidden once you do.
6.) Last, but not the least, if you had the chance to cook for someone you don't personally know and invite him/her over dinner, who would that person be, and why?
I love this question! Cooking for someone is so different than going out for dinner, isn’t it? So much more intimate and personal! So, honestly…. Sharon Hinn. She’s perhaps my favorite fantasy author (up there with Megan Whalen Turner, Anne Bishop, and Patricia A. McKillip), and I’d just love to get to tell her how much of an impact her books have had on me, and how much inspiration they’ve given me as a fellow writer of romantic fantasy. I’d also want to learn about how she creates such intricate, unique worlds, compelling and real characters, and how she basically just…does everything. I wish more people knew about her work, because she is second to none.

Beautiful cover? Check. Intriguing blurb that piques your curiosity? Check. Hype? Check. Friends left and right recommending that you read this book? Check.
See, like almost everyone on the blogosphere, I've been wanting to read Red Queen for months now, and this is mainly because of the monstrous hype surrounding it.. Almost a year before its release, there were already talk about how it was going to be YA's next big thing. I remember downloading it off edelweiss on the existence of my friends and fellow bloggers (*waves at Kai and Leslie*), and the when I finally had the time to sit down and start reading, I was instantly hooked. Like, let me finish reading instead of sleeping because who really needs sleep anyway hooked. So yes, I bet you guys can just imagine how excited I was when I was asked to be part of the blog tour!
The main premise of Red Queen explores the relationship of the red-blooded - those deemed of low status and without magical capabilities - and the silver blooded who can do magic and are considered the most important members of society. Simply put, who you are and what you do in life is decided by the color of your blood. The Reds serve the Silvers, and while there is unrest at how unjustly the Reds are often treated, no one can really do anything about it because of the silvers' powers. All this changes, however, once seventeen-year-old Mare discovers that she has magic of her own... despite being red-blooded. To avoid political mayhem, the king and queen decide that Mare is to pretend to be a Silver, and is subsequently engaged to Prince Maven, second-in-line to the throne.
Those who know me know that I don't usually like fantasy and that dystopia is most often a miss rather than a hit for me, but what I really liked about Red Queen is that it straddles the line between the two genres. As a result, no aspect about each genre is too heavy - there aren't too many headache-inducing concepts, and since the book didn't just focus on the government and political unrest, it was easier as a whole to just.. go with the story, if you get what I mean. There were no moments wherein I had to turn back a page a or two because I could not for the life of me understand what was going on - instead, we have a book that is easy to lose yourself into.
Moreover, Mare, our heroine, is undoubtedly one of the best aspects of Red Queen. I love her determination, her sense of justice, her undying desire to right all the wrong she sees, and her unwavering love for her family. Things were never easy for Mare, but never did I get the sense that she was close to giving up and throwing all her dreams away. She knew that she was her people's only shot for a peaceful life without servitude, and that's something that was in the forefront of her mind with every decision that she made. She fought tooth and nail (and damn she fought hard) to achieve all that she she had set out to do. Mare's grit and persistence remained constant throughout the book, and that's something I really like. As a matter of fact, some of my favorite parts in Red Queen were the parts wherein she was being taught how to harness her magic properly, and how to be a fighter, simply because it was here where Mare's strength and firm resolve were showcased excessively.
I also loved seeing the story unfold through Mare's eyes. Here we have Mare, while possessing a secret that has the potential to topple the current political standing thrust into this world of power struggles and deceit. I loved how were privy to Mare's innnermost thoughts while she danced around the members of the royal household and all the elite families, attempting to find just who it is who she can trust. It was also a treat to see how Mare's relationships with Prince Maven, her betrothed, and Prince Cal, heir apparent and someone who has saved Mare in the past, evolved. Who can she trust between the two brothers - strong Calwho is already more than capable to lead the country, or kind Maven, who has always been in the shadow of his older brother?
Full of action and with its fair share of lies, deceit, and betrayal, Red Queen is a tale that will keep you guessing until the very end. There will be points in the book wherein you will think that you know the characters and what they're capable of, but trust me when I say that you don't. All in all an engrossing read that will make you want more, I can't recommend Red Queen enough!

Please describe Stolen Songbird in five words.
Magic, intrigue, romance, adventure, and mystery
Can you please tell us about the research you had to do prior to (or maybe while) writing this novel?
I don’t do any research before I start writing, but I do spend quite a bit of time on Google once I’ve got the story going. Obviously I spent a bit of time thinking about existing troll mythology, but I also spent a lot of time looking into the properties of certain plants for Cécile’s witchy scenes. There are places in the novel that are based on the real world, so I looked up a lot of images for inspiration. My preference is to go back and edit or fill in research-based information after I’ve got the story itself down, because forcing those sorts of details in while I’m drafting often stifles my creative process. Which probably means that it’s a good thing I write fantasy and not historical fiction!
Please tell us more about this magical world that you created.
The bulk of the novel takes place in Trollus, which is the trolls’ city, if you hadn’t guessed from its super creative name ;-) Five hundred years prior to when the novel begins, Trollus was buried by a mountain that was split in half, and only the trolls’ magic kept everything from being crushed. So the city is effectively in a cave, and it’s surrounded by a labyrinth of rock where some nasty creatures called the sluag live.
I've read my fair share of fantasy novels, but I have to admit that this is the first time I've encountered a book wherein the main characters are trolls or part-trolls. What made you decide to write about them?
I was actually inspired to write the story by a dream I had about the setting. The trolls came into being when I started thinking about what sort of creatures would populate such a place, and they really grew and developed as the story went along. They are quite a bit different from the trolls of LoTR or Harry Potter, but hopefully people appreciate my spin on them.
What can we expect from this series?
My goal was to write a trilogy with a balance of political intrigue, romance, and adventure. If readers are entertained by the story and care about the characters then I consider my mission accomplished.
Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents' tragic death and Kacey's self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would...and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.
Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton?
As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.

Can you please take us through your writing process?
I've tried everything from outlining to just writing and I find that my ideal process varies for each project but generally lands somewhere in between (closer to the "just writing" side of the scale). I spend an excessively long time on the first three chapters, as getting the beginning of a story right makes all the difference. I write linearly, meaning I don't write chunks from all over the book and paste them together. Inevitably, as I get further into the book and plot, I realize how many things I need to change in the first half. When I start dwelling on those, I stop and go back. It's a mental thing. I need to see the right story progression before I can finish a book. Even if I know what must be changed, I get to a point where I just can't continue until I fix it.
Where did you get the idea for the Ten Tiny Breaths series?
The idea for the first book just kind of hit me (I know people who have been involved in drunk driving incidents). I didn't see the entire story for what it was at the time; I just knew I wanted to paint a picture of how dangerous and life-altering drinking and driving could be.
While writing Ten Tiny Breaths, did you ever think that you would be writing an entire series?
LOL NO! I didn't realize how much people would love all of the other characters from the series until after TTB was released and the reviews started coming out.
What can your readers expect from One Tiny Lie?
ONE TINY LIE is different from TEN TINY BREATHS. It's set three years after TTB, and it's told in Livie's voice (which is very different from Kacey's voice) as she goes through the growing pains of learning that the life she mapped out for herself isn't the one she truly wants.

INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTINE:
Describe CHAOS in 5 words.
Tense. Romantic. Funny. Action-packed. Boy-crush.
Where did you come up the idea for CHAOS?
This book was actually a collaboration between me and my editor and publisher at Entangled, Liz Pelletier. She was looking for someone to write a book based on an idea she had and put out a call to authors, asking them to write and submit a sample chapter in their best YA voice. Then, she planned to pick one of the authors to work with on her story concept. 156 of us sent in writing samples, and a week later, she called me, SUPER excited about the scene I sent her. She loved it so much, she wanted to contract my story immediately. So we took the little kernel of an idea I had written, and sat on the phone until around 2 a.m. brainstorming and world building around that scene. What we ended up was a loose outline for Chaos (and the rest of the Kardia Chronicles series). It was literally one of the most exciting and fun creative experiences of my life!
Tell us more about CHAOS - how is it different from other YA novels that are loosely based on mythology?
Chaos is about a girl who comes to find out that she’s a semi-god (a descendant of Aphrodite, but not a demigod, because she’s a distant descendant rather than the child of a god). She realizes very quickly that she has almost no control over her powers. I think the biggest thing that makes Chaos different is that it’s not steeped in one type of lore or one country’s mythology. Semi-gods can descend from Greek gods, Egyptian gods, Roman gods and on and on. Mac explains it like this: “If you look at the cultures around the world, a lot of the gods are similar. Zeus, Jupiter, Odin, Indra…the details are flat-out wrong sometimes, but at the heart of most mythology is a core truth. No one culture was totally wrong or totally right." So the concept allows me to pull from so many different places, and sort of turn mythology on its ear a little, which is super fun!
Did you have to do a lot of research to write this novel?
I did! Although I re-imagined a lot of the details, I wanted to make sure that I had a good base of knowledge going in.
Maggie seems like such a kickass female heroine - did writing about her come naturally?
It’s so weird, because that’s exactly what happened. It came so naturally, it was scary. I never felt more at home writing than I did when I was writing in Maggie’s voice. It just poured onto the page.
Say you were related to a god or goddess... who would that god or goddess be?
I think I’d go with Poseidon. I love the ocean and think it would be super badass to be able to control the waves and tides and maybe, like, chill with mermaids or whatever he does during his down time.

Is this book part of a series?
Yes. NO PEACE FOR THE DAMNED is the first in the Magnolia Kelch series.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
Chapter 29 was definitely my favorite chapter to write. It was also the very first chapter I wrote. I had that scene with Magnolia and Theo on the couch long before I knew anything else about the characters or the story around them. All I knew was that this incredibly sexy young woman, who felt separate from everyone around her, suddenly felt a genuine, normal connection to someone else. The excitement of that moment overshadowed any other insecurities so that when she revealed her tattoo without thought of the consequences, she revealed an innocence that would otherwise be out of character. That moment shows that more than anything, all she really wanted was to have something – anything – in common with someone else.
Who’s your favorite character to write and why?
Definitely Magnolia. The book is told from her point of view so I really get to slip into her mind while I write. I love that she is strong and powerful, terrified and angry, whip-smart and completely naïve all at the same time. I remember very clearly being twenty-two and thinking I was the toughest person in the world with all these life experiences while at the same time feeling more vulnerable and uncertain than ever. It is a wonderful experience to be able to relive those feelings through a character with such unlimited potential.
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is special?
Magnolia Kelch is a surprisingly well-adjusted young woman considering she spent the first twenty-two years of life in the torturous captivity of her father and uncle. That’s not to say that she isn’t incredibly suspicious of everyone and everything, likely to shoot first and ask questions never. She is the most powerful supernatural person in her extremely powerful family, but has been victimized her entire life leaving her unsure of what she can really do. More than anything, Magnolia is eager to finally experience a level of independence previously denied her – including feeling all of the emotions that only a truly free person can feel.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
The setting is definitely reflective of my life as Hoosier. And as my father so aptly pointed out, every member of my immediate family has a first name that begins with the letter “M”… although that is where the similarities end between my real family and the Kelches.
Leave us with a teaser/quote from your book?
“In that last moment of consciousness I had to chastise myself. I was not supposed to live in this world without violence and pain. And I was an idiot to have ever let myself think otherwise.”

Tell us what your book is about in 140 characters or less.
Addicted to You is about Leah, who has no interest in love because she's convinced everyone eventually lets you down. Then she meets Will. Dun dun dun! :P
Is this book part of a series?
Yes. There will be a second novel in the Addicted to You universe, which will focus on a separate couple.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
Probably the scene where Leah and her brother run into Will at the party. A lot of things happen between the beginning of the night and the end of it, and it was fun writing about how their relationship subtly shifts.
Who’s your favorite character to write and why?
Leah, because it was amusing to push her character and see how she’d respond. There were times I actually had to scale her back a bit and soften her up because she already comes off a little harsh.
Is there a character / characters in your books you particularly identify with?

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is special?
Leah doesn’t bother trying to get along with anyone she doesn’t genuinely care about. And since it’s difficult to grow close with anyone new if she doesn’t bother trying to get along with them, there are very few people who she has truly allowed into her life.
If you gave one of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?
Leah isn’t much for talking about herself, so she’d probably tell you to mind your own business.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
Leah’s situation with her brother is one that echoes my cousin’s. She basically raised her little sister after she challenged her mom that she could do a better job.
