Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

I'm not that fond of books told in multiple POVs. Dual POVs are alright for the most part, but there aren't really a lot of authors that can pull off multiple POVs. Usually, the characters end up sounding alike, aren't explored thoroughly, and not given enough chances to grow.

  1. I was having trouble reading The Rise of Nine because of multiple POV. But after several pages of reading I just got used to it :)

  2. I agree. If the narratives are different, multiple POVs don't bother me, but you are right, the characters end up sounding the same. It makes it difficult to distinguish who is narrating. It is a device that shouldn't be done unless it can be done flawlessly. Great answer. Old follower, here's my FF: http://meganm922.blogspot.com/2012/10/feature-and-follow-fridaywriting-tricks.html

  3. Somehow George R. R. Martin pulls this off, but then he has a LOT of pages to do it in ;)

  5. I agree! Not many authors seem to be able to pull off the changing POVs. The point is so you understand the other characters differing views, but they all start to blend together.

  6. Hi! I actually really like books with alternating POVs, espcially if it's a male and female character. I don't think I've read any books yet with multiple POVs, but probably would agree it would be difficult to follow.
Thanks for the follow, I've followed you back :)

  7. I love multiple POVs! No more than 3 though, since then it gets confusing and I feel no connection to most of them.

  8. Hi. Thanks for stopping by YA Society! I agree with mulitple points of view. It's tough to keep hopping around in different characters heads. I hate when you are really wrapped up in a character and BAM the author switches POV. UGH!
