Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?
I roll my eyes at insta-love, sure, but I don't consider it a deal breaker unlike bad editing, wrong grammar, and choppy sentences. I get why authors intentionally splice sentences, but some authors just take it too far. An example (not verbatim) - 'Jake. His right-hand man. Who would do absolutely anything for him.' Also, multiple POVs (four and above) confuse the heck out of me most of the time.
I agree with your answer. =)

my FF post and I'm following you back =)

Most definitely! More than 4 narrators tends to push things. The short sentences, they can be good, but your example is good for being a tad annoying. I don't mind them too much though. I find grammar errors or spelling every now and then but it doesn't bother me. Just makes me wish I could've proofread the book for them!

I don't mind multiple POVs if done well, but totally agree on the rest. Great answers. Old follower via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D
ReplyDeleteVoted by the majority: instant love :-)
ReplyDeleteAh! and love triangles!
New follower.-
I like multiple POVs but four or more is pushing it. You'd have to do it really well to pull it off.

LOL good answer, I don't mind alternating POV's but four or more would be too much for me as well. I mentioned editing in my FFF as well. Thanks for sharing, new follower via GFC :)

That was an awkward sentence(s) for sure! And multiple POV's are also hard for me to follow.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my post. New follower.
I don't mind different POV's but I agree that maybe four is a good limit! :)

I've never read a book with more than two POVs, but I can definitely see how that would be annoying. I'd have trouble keeping up with all the characters.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I agree with you. Grammar mistakes, bad editing, and choppy sentences are distracting. On the other hand though, it's fun to read ARC's and know that you've read it before everyone else.

If there are a lot of POV's I get confused too.
ReplyDeleteI hate short choppy sentences, they really ruin the flow of the book. Make reading it uncomfortable.
Thanks for visiting my blog. :D
